F-Secure Anti-Virus

F-Secure Antivirus is a great product that offers many of the standard functions associated with antivirus software, but also goes above and beyond the bar set by others with efforts by F-Secure to educate the people that use F-Secure Antivirus on general security practices as well as specific threats.

F-Secure Antivirus is one of the most effective antivirus programs on the market. Its heuristic scanner is considered by many to be one of the fastest and most complete on the market.

We did have some problems with its on-access scanner though. The test system we used is a pretty fast system. Intel Pentium D 2.8GHz with 1GB of RAM. The on-access scanner would sometimes bring this system to a halt when opening programs or moving files.

F-Secure Antivirus comes with the standard protection you would expect from any modern antivirus suite. Both on-access and on-demand scanners are included as well as a spyware scanner that runs with both. An email scanner is also included for those of us using local mail clients like Outlook or Thunderbird.

One feature we especially liked about F-Secure Antivirus was the integrated news on the home menu. The Security News section is full of useful information about which new security threats are out and whether you are protected from each threat.

It takes guts to introduce a brand-new antivirus solution in a crowded market, but Sunbelt Software, known best for its award-winning CounterSpy antispyware, is doing just that by creating its own antivirus engine from the ground up. Arriving late has advantages, however. Traditional antivirus engines have been slow to adapt to emerging threats.

Features
What we like is that Vipre packs a lot of extras, extras that other antivirus products should have but often do not.

In addition to antivirus and antispyware protection, there are useful tools such as a secure file eraser that writes 1s and 0s over deleted files, a history cleaner that goes beyond just what's in your Internet browser cache, and something called PC Explorer, which reveals processes and services running that might be suspect or known to be malicious. Many of these tools are also featured within Sunbelt Software's standalone antispyware product, CounterSpy v2.

Performance
Short of final code and formal testing, we cannot say how Vipre performs relative to other antivirus products on the market. But in informal testing, the product feels fast, uses few system resources, and didn't try to convince us that benign Internet cookies were a threat.

AVG know a thing or two about security threats, and they believe that every day in the world at least two million web pages have hidden threats. The company decided to launch a download free link scanner, which is why AVG help protect Internet users against what they call “the random online threats invisible.

IT Wire reported that AVG count each day, at least 60 percent of these threats of closure or often hidden moves to another destination on the Internet. It certainly makes scanning more crucial, and as usual, AVG offer this free download.

After having Ashampoo AntiSpyWare here, now it's the time for the hot antivirus solution from Ashampoo released at the end of last week. The name of this software solution to the virus menace is Ashampoo AntiVirus, and if you used the antispyware tool from Ashampoo, then this one is going to be a joyride.

The first public version of this antivirus is labeled 1.0 and comes as a 10 days trial that can be extended to a month if you register to receive a free code from Ashampoo. The installation kit has exactly 12MB in size and the setup process is as easy as possible to complete. Once you finish the setup process, you have to reboot your computer before using the program for the first time. Now, let's start diggin'!

If you have seen the antispyware tool from Ashampoo, then you also know the looks of the antivirus. The interface I see here is not skinnable, but other than that, it looks like the antispyware - a menu bar and six major areas - Main Menu, Scan, Schedule, Quarantine, Report and Preferences. As usual, I'll take you through each of these areas and tell you some things about them.

The Main Menu area is used to get information about the program's previous activity, update status and for starting various tasks. The real time protection, called AntiVirus Guard, can be enabled and disabled here with a single mouse click. The daily automatic updates can be enabled or disabled and you can also start different scanning tasks here. The number of viruses currently recognized by the program and the date of the last update can also be found out inside the Main Menu, as well as the number of scans performed, engine version number, amount of infections found and removed.

Next, as usual, we find the Scan area. There is a full system scan mode available and six selective scan modes - memory, system areas, all hard drives, scan removable drives, CD-ROMs and custom folders scan. The same problem that I had with the antispyware occurred here - the scan process was pretty boring, but if you schedule your full system scan for the night time, you shouldn't care much about that.

The next area is, naturally, Schedule. There's nothing special to say about it, and I can't expect more from such a feature than to do its job.

Quarantine and Logs are the next two areas that I like to see clear of any data, and the reason should be obvious...Anyway, you don't have any reason to worry about their functionality, everything's just fine here.

This program's Preferences area has a single screen with settings very easy to understand for everybody that allow you to choose scan, updates and heuristics options.
