It was shocking to see Intel release the Core 2 Extreme Processor QX9770 for preview so soon, but I'm guessing that it was done to head off AMD's launch of the Phenom series of Quad-Core processors that happens tomorrow morning. By showing off the Core 2 Extreme Processor QX9770 performance numbers early it means that many of the review sites will include these numbers to go along with the Phenom processor model 9900 (2.6GHz) as it too won't be out till next year. I guess it's fair for both companies to preview their upcoming products as many other industries like the automotive industry, for example, show off upcoming models many months in advance.
